Reflecting on Eamonn Walker’s Departure from Chicago Fire
As Chicago Fire wraps up its twelfth season, viewers have had to say goodbye to several beloved characters, most notably Chief Wallace Boden, portrayed by Eamonn Walker since the show’s inception. Since its premiere in October 2012, the NBC procedural drama, created by Michael Brandt and Derek Haas, has captivated audiences with the personal and professional lives of the firefighters and paramedics at Firehouse 51.
Over its 13-season run, Chicago Fire has seen a number of actors leave the series, and Walker’s departure adds to this poignant list. From Lauren German’s exit as Leslie Shay in season 3 to Yuri Sardarov’s departure as Brian “Otis” Zvonecek in season 8, many cast members have moved on due to various circumstances, whether through character deaths, relocations, or other reasons.
While it’s not uncommon for long-running series to experience cast changes, the exit of a prominent character like Boden is particularly emotional for fans. Eamonn Walker has been a cornerstone of the show since day one, yet he has not publicly explained the reasons for his departure. Speculation suggests that his long tenure on the series influenced his decision to step down, as many actors in the One Chicago universe often seek new opportunities after several years.
In a statement to Deadline, Chicago Fire executive producer Dick Wolf reflected on Walker’s impact: “Eamonn was the first actor cast on Chicago Fire, and we knew once he said yes, that we were off and running. His character, Chief Wallace Boden, was the undisputed leader of Firehouse 51, and off-screen, Eamonn has filled the same role with our ensemble cast.”
Showrunner Andrea Newman also shared her sentiments about Walker’s departure in an interview, emphasizing the strong bond he formed with the cast and crew: “Eamonn is the most big-hearted, passionate, hard-working, and dedicated actor (and human) I know. He is like a father to every cast member and crew member of this team. He is loved like no other. Any change in his position on Fire is going to feel like an earthquake.”
Just weeks before the season 12 finale, news of Walker’s exit surprised fans, especially given his status as a veteran cast member. The finale, however, provided a fitting conclusion for his character, as Chief Boden announced his candidacy for the Chicago Fire Department’s Deputy Commissioner position. Although he may no longer be referred to as “Chief,” his legacy will undoubtedly live on in the hearts of Chicago Fire fans.
As the show moves forward, viewers will remember Eamonn Walker not just for his role as Chief Boden, but also for the warmth and leadership he brought to the cast and crew of Chicago Fire.
