Season 7 of “The Rookie” Faces Major Shift, Leaving Fans Disappointed
“The Rookie” is set for a significant shift in its seventh season, as ABC has slated it for a midseason premiere in 2025. The network’s fall schedule will kick off with “Dancing With the Stars,” followed by the new drama “High Potential.” Notably, neither “The Rookie” nor “Will Trent” will appear until the midseason lineup.
This delay has sparked considerable disappointment among fans, who have expressed their dismay on social media. Comments range from concerns about mental health due to the shift, to surprise and frustration over the delayed release.
Despite the wait, there is a silver lining. Once “The Rookie” begins airing, ABC plans to deliver an uninterrupted run of 18 episodes. Craig Erwich, President of Disney Television Group, emphasized the strategic placement of the show. “At this point in its lifecycle, ‘The Rookie’ continues to grow, even in its sixth season. It, along with ‘Will Trent,’ drives significant viewership on Hulu, proving their strength as key elements of our programming strategy,” Erwich explained to TV Line.
He further noted that launching these shows in January would allow for a continuous sequence of original episodes, which is crucial for maintaining viewer engagement. “The Rookie” was renewed for its seventh season in April, during the airing of its sixth season, underscoring its ongoing success and importance to ABC’s lineup.
