Open Doors: The Potential Return of Scott Bakula’s Dwayne Pride to the NCIS Universe
The universe of “NCIS” has always been anchored in the concept of family, encompassing both the tight-knit teams that stand by each other through thick and thin and the romantic bonds formed between colleagues over the years. This sense of family extends beyond the main series, with characters from the various “NCIS” spin-offs crossing paths, forming alliances, and even friendships, despite initial disagreements.
This dynamic has allowed for the reintegration of characters from concluded or canceled series, exemplified by Sam Hanna (LL Cool J) from “NCIS: Los Angeles” making appearances on “NCIS: Hawai’i” as a semi-regular character. This begs the question: Could we see other familiar faces, like Dwayne “King” Cassius Pride (Scott Bakula) from “NCIS: New Orleans,” reemerge in the franchise?
The possibility of such crossover events is open, according to CBS Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach and CBS Studios President David Stapf, who spoke to Deadline about the potential for characters like King to guest star in other franchise shows. Stapf emphasized the importance of these appearances feeling organic to the storyline rather than being mere publicity stunts.
Reisenbach echoed this sentiment, highlighting the franchise’s familial ethos and openness to welcoming back alumni in various capacities. This approach was demonstrated by Daniela Ruah from “NCIS: Los Angeles,” who has directed episodes across the franchise.
While Scott Bakula has yet to comment on a potential return, his departure from “NCIS: New Orleans” was marked by a mix of emotions. Nevertheless, the door remains open for future spin-offs or returns, including for beloved characters who have been off-screen for a while.
Among these potential returns, the idea of a limited series focused on Pauley Perrette’s character, Abby Sciuto, was floated. Although initially mentioned in jest by Stapf, the concept has gained traction as a serious consideration, given Abby’s popularity with fans. Perrette, who has not acted since her sitcom “Broke” was canceled, maintains a presence on social media.
Despite previous tensions with Mark Harmon, a limited series centered on Abby could be developed without Harmon’s involvement, leaving the future of both Abby and King open to exploration.
This ongoing dialogue and the openness to bringing back beloved characters underscore the enduring appeal of the “NCIS” universe and its capacity to evolve and surprise its audience with new developments and reunions.
