Although production on Dutton Ranch Season 2 is not expected to begin until next year, preparations for the highly anticipated return are already well underway. One of the biggest behind-the-scenes changes is the arrival of a new showrunner, and star Cole Hauser has made it clear that he is optimistic about what lies ahead for the hit series.
The leadership change follows the departure of former showrunner Chad Feehan shortly before Season 1 premiered. In July, the series officially named Benjamin Cavell as its new showrunner. Cavell brings years of television experience to the role, having previously worked on acclaimed projects including SEAL Team, Homeland, The Stand, and The Institute.
Hauser, who stars as Rip Wheeler and also serves as an executive producer on Dutton Ranch, recently shared his thoughts on Cavell’s arrival. Speaking positively about the new addition, the actor described Cavell as someone with a clear creative vision and expressed confidence that the series is heading in the right direction.
“I’ve been talking to him. He’s a very special guy, and I think the future is bright—not only for myself, but Beth [Kelly Reilly], Carter [Finn Little], and the show in general. I think this is going to be a really nice next step.”
This is not the first time Hauser has spoken highly of the new showrunner. In an earlier interview, he explained that Cavell came highly recommended by someone who had worked with him for several seasons on SEAL Team. According to Hauser, that recommendation, along with Cavell’s creative approach, convinced the team that he was the right person to guide the next chapter of the series.
“So it was his recommendation of Ben, and the way creatively that Ben is and the kind of person he is and how his mind works, and we saw a glimpse of it. We had a very good meeting with him, and I cannot wait for this new iteration of Ben and his team of guys that he hires…”
Season 1 was not without its challenges behind the scenes. Hauser previously acknowledged that adjusting to new writers and directors without Taylor Sheridan’s direct involvement made the production different from what many of the cast had experienced before. Despite those obstacles, the actor believes the series has established a strong foundation.
Looking ahead, there is optimism that Sheridan will play a larger creative role during Season 2. With Benjamin Cavell now leading the production and the returning cast preparing for another chapter, fans are eager to see how Dutton Ranch builds on its successful debut. Hauser’s confidence in the new leadership is likely to reassure viewers that the series is moving in a promising direction.
